About the Marathi Tense Practice Tool
Marathi has a rich tense system (काळ) with three primary time frames — present (वर्तमानकाळ), past (भूतकाळ), and future (भविष्यकाळ) — each subdivided into simple, continuous, and perfect aspects. Mastering these nine (or more) distinct tense forms is essential for reading Marathi accurately and for performing well in grammar examinations. This Tense Practice Tool targets that skill directly with 12 questions that ask you either to identify the tense of a given Marathi sentence or to convert a sentence from one tense to another.

Key Marathi tense forms covered
The question bank includes identification and conversion tasks for the following tense forms: सामान्य वर्तमानकाळ (simple present, ending in तो/ते/ती), वर्तमान वृत्तांतारी (present continuous, participle + आहे), सामान्य भूतकाळ (simple past, fully irregular), भूतकाळ वृत्तांतारी (past continuous, participle + होता/होती), पूर्ण भूतकाळ (past perfect, past participle + होते), सामान्य भविष्यकाळ (simple future, root + ईल/तील), and भविष्यकाळ वृत्तांतारी (future continuous, णार आहे/आहोत). Understanding how to read and produce each of these forms is a core competency for MPSC and school-level Marathi examinations.
Tips for learning Marathi tenses
The most common mistake learners make is treating Marathi verb forms as simple one-to-one translations of English tenses. In Marathi, the past tense verb form also changes to agree with the gender and number of the object for transitive verbs, while intransitive verbs agree with the subject. For example, the simple past of जाणे (to go) is गेलो for a male speaker and गेले for a female speaker. Practise conversion exercises daily — converting the same sentence from present to past to future — until all three tense families feel natural. The Grammar Quiz Generator provides additional mixed-tense practice.
