About the Marathi Verb Conjugation Tool

Mastering verb conjugation is the single most important step toward writing and speaking प्रमाण मराठी (standard Marathi) correctly. Unlike English, where verbs change only slightly with person or tense, Marathi verbs carry gender, number, and person information all at once — and in the past tense, transitive verbs must agree with the object rather than the subject. This Marathi Verb Conjugation tool gives you accurate, ready-to-study conjugation tables for twelve of the most commonly used Marathi verbs.

Each card in the tool covers one verb in its full present, past, and future paradigm. For transitive verbs such as खाणे, लिहिणे, वाचणे, देणे, घेणे, पाहणे, and सांगणे, the past-tense table shows forms keyed to the object gender — because the ergative construction demands it. For intransitive verbs such as जाणे and येणे, the past-tense forms are keyed to the subject. The irregular copula असणे is presented in its own paradigm with the full set of present auxiliary forms (आहे, आहेस, आहोत, आहात, आहेत).

Why verb conjugation matters for learners

In Marathi, a single wrong suffix can change the meaning of a sentence or mark it as ungrammatical. For example, ती गेला (using a masculine verb with a feminine subject) is immediately noticeable as an error to any native speaker. Competitive examinations such as MPSC, TET, and school-board papers regularly test verb forms. The tables in this tool are built from standard prescriptive Marathi grammar and match what examiners expect.

Tips for memorising verb forms

The twelve verbs here cover the core vocabulary you need for everyday Marathi: movement (जाणे, येणे), communication (बोलणे, सांगणे), physical action (खाणे, लिहिणे, वाचणे, पाहणे), exchange (देणे, घेणे), existence (असणे), and general action (करणे). Once you know these twelve paradigms, all other regular verbs follow the same suffix patterns — you only need to change the stem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Marathi has an ergative-like alignment in the past tense for transitive verbs. The agent (doer) takes the suffix -ने/-नी, and the verb agrees in gender and number with the direct object instead of the agent. This is a systematic feature of Marathi grammar shared with several other Indo-Aryan languages.

Add -त to the verb stem (dhatu) to get the conjunctive participle, then add the present tense of असणे. For example: कर् + त = करत; करत + आहे = करत आहे (is doing). The auxiliary agrees with the subject in person and number.

All forms presented here follow prescriptive प्रमाण मराठी grammar as taught in Maharashtra state schools and tested in competitive examinations. Colloquial speech often shortens or merges forms, but the tables here are what you should write in formal contexts and exams.

असणे expresses a state of existence or identity (to be, to exist) and its present-tense forms are the auxiliaries आहे, आहेस, आहोत etc. होणे expresses becoming or happening, and its past forms झाला, झाली, झाले are used for completed events or changes of state.
