About the Barakhadi Practice Tool
The बाराखडी is one of the most powerful foundations of Marathi literacy. The word itself comes from बारा (twelve) and खडी (syllable type), and the chart shows every Marathi consonant combined with each of the twelve core vowels. Once you can recognise all the syllables in the chart, you gain the ability to decode virtually any written Marathi word — even words you have never seen before. How to use it

Why the barakhadi matters
In Maharashtra, children learn the बाराखडी in Class 1 before they read whole sentences. This bottom-up phonics approach ensures that any written syllable can be decoded on sight. The same skill is directly tested in competitive exams such as MPSC and school-level assessments, where candidates may be asked to complete a barakhadi row or identify a syllable. Knowing the बाराखडी fluently is therefore both a foundational literacy skill and an exam-ready competency.
The twelve vowels that appear in every barakhadi row are अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ, अं, अः. Each consonant combined with these vowels produces a completely predictable syllable following the same matra rules every time. This regularity is what makes the बाराखडी learnable in a matter of weeks with consistent daily practice — typically twenty to thirty minutes per day over four to six weeks is enough to achieve solid recognition of all rows.
Tips for faster mastery
Practise one consonant row per day and review all previously learned rows before beginning a new one. Chant each row aloud while looking at the syllables — this combines visual and auditory memory. Pay special attention to the इ matra, which appears to the left of the consonant in writing even though it is pronounced after it, and to the अं column, which carries the anusvara and appears very frequently in everyday Marathi words.
