Passage 1 — माझे गाव (My Village)

(The Importance of Books)

About this Reading Practice Tool
This tool provides two original Marathi reading passages followed by comprehension questions, giving learners a structured way to practise reading मराठी in natural, connected prose. Whether you are a school student preparing for exams or an adult learner strengthening your language skills, regular reading practice is the single most effective way to build vocabulary, improve grammar intuition, and develop fluency.
What the passages cover
The first passage, माझे गाव (My Village), describes village life in Maharashtra — the landscape, the temple, the river, and the festivals. The vocabulary is everyday and accessible, making it ideal for beginners and intermediate readers. The second passage, पुस्तकाचे महत्त्व (The Importance of Books), discusses why reading matters and references celebrated Marathi authors such as पु. ल. देशपांडे. Both passages are written in standard प्रमाण मराठी, the form taught in Maharashtra State Board schools.
How to use this tool
- Read each passage aloud at least once. Hearing the words as you read trains your pronunciation and rhythm.
- Look up any unfamiliar word using our Marathi Dictionary or Vocabulary Builder.
- Answer the four comprehension questions under each passage. Questions test literal recall, vocabulary in context, and inference.
- Review the explanations after you submit — they show exactly which sentence in the passage contains the answer.
- Return to the passages a day later and try to summarise each one in your own words in Marathi.
Why reading comprehension matters
In Maharashtra State Board and competitive examinations such as MPSC, reading comprehension (उतारा) carries significant marks. Understanding a passage quickly and accurately is a skill that improves only with deliberate practice. This tool lets you build that skill step by step. Reading connected text also exposes you to realistic sentence structures, proper use of विभक्ती (case suffixes), and natural paragraph flow — elements that isolated vocabulary drills cannot replicate.
Tips for faster improvement
Try to read at least one Marathi newspaper article or short story every day. Well-known publications such as लोकसत्ता and सकाळ offer a wide range of topics and register. Pair reading with our Vocabulary Builder to record new words you encounter. Over time you will notice that comprehension questions become easier because familiar sentence patterns appear across different topics.
